favorite Heirloom suggestions

Staring seeds this weekend if i get around to it hopefully.
I am trying some different stuff this year, just to see what's what and if i can grow it and if we like it. I have some small extra room this year.
This will be the first year i try to start some seeds that i have saved myself (a brandywine red) so we'll see how that goes. Wish me luck.
Got the usual zucchini, eggplant, carrots(never have much luck here), lettuces, spinach, peppers, pole beans and peas.
I found an interesting looking chard called five-colored silverbeet that i am going to try too.
What are some unusual favorites that people here like?
I'm willing to give anything a try really. Some different type leaf crops would be good.
I only have a small patch using SF gardening MO, cause the kids will shoot me if I try and commandeer any more yard space this year, so no pumpkins or rambling vines are feasible (my neighboors pumpkins come a full 15 feet onto my property by semptember so I can steal a couple of his!).
And I will hopefully be relocating sometime during the season , so no interest in asparagus and that type stuff.
Is it possible to get any type of onions or potatos in half day sun (behind the shed)?

I'm also thinking of using the roof of my shed that faces south, to rig some sort of out of sight herb garden type setup. Is that a poor idea? Land is at a premium here at the panda ranch.
What are some GIM favorites?
Thanks.

Yep I am getting in gardening mode now too. I got all my seeds I ordered and my first planting in the basement under fluorescent lights begins this weekend.

This year I am going to build a little hoop house over one of my raised beds and try to get my transplants in there as early as possible because I always have problems with them later in the basement as they take so much space with rampant growth.

For heirloom varieties I have tried many different tomato ones and so far I like Moskvich the best. It is the most reliable in my area of Southern New York. Brandywine grew pretty well but from I gather it's really hard to find a true Branywine there are so many imposers or sub varieties of the original strain so its hard to tell if you got the right one. The original Brandywine is a pale pink colored fruit when ripe.

Other than tomatoes I have tried some heirloom squash and peppers but they didnt agree with my climate.
